The game’s soundtrack by Melos Han-Tani is pressed on ‘Primordial Haze’ vinyl.
The soundtrack to adventure game Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is set for a vinyl release and music label Yetee Records has now made pre-orders available ahead of its release later this year.
Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is the 2019 sequel to the original Anodyne which was released back in 2013. The sequel is set on the island of New Theland where its inhabitants have been infected by Nano Dust, causing their emotions and desires to be distorted. Players take on the role of Nova the Nano Cleaner as they explore the island to help the sick by shrinking down small enough to enter their bodies and clean up the Nano Dust. Gameplay switches between the 3D environments on New Theland and 2D mindscapes of the islanders.
The game’s multi-genre soundtrack, composed by Melos Han-Tani, is pressed on a ‘Primordial Haze’ vinyl disc and comprises 26 select tracks of music. This vinyl release is limited to 300 copies and can be pre-ordered now from The Yetee online store with shipping expected in Q3 2021.
This album features artwork by Marina Ayano Kittaka and comes with a download of the digital soundtrack along with liner notes by the composer.
“This soundtrack pays homage to multiple decades and histories of video game music from the NES to contemporary times, as well as a wide canon of electronic, dance, classical music and more,” Han-Tani explained. “That is, it builds upon the work of both famous and well-known composers, to composers with small Soundcloud or Bandcamp followings. It also builds upon the sounds and textures we hear every day!
“The instruments range from many of my own synthesizer instruments and textures made in Ableton Live’s Operator, Wavetable and Collision synths, to samples from the SNES and Genesis, to common percussion or live instrument samples.”
The composer has written up an incomplete list of musical influences that helped shape the soundtrack to Anodyne 2: Return to Dust, though fans should read with caution if they are worried about game spoilers.
Yetee Records has previously released the game’s soundtrack on cassette tape which was a part of the music label’s timed sale last year called Cassette Fest.
Anodyne 2: Return to Dust is developed by Analgesic Productions (a two-person team comprising Ayano Kittaka and Han-Tani) and available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Linux, macOS, and Windows.
