“… the music takes an interestingly dark turn.”

To coincide with the launch of Card of Darkness on Apple’s new subscription service Apple Arcade, music label Materia Collective has announced the release of the official soundtrack to the card-based adventure game.

Composed by guitarist Stemage, the soundtrack to Card of Darkness comprises 13 synth tracks and is available now from digital outlets such as Bandcamp, Google Play, and iTunes, as well as streaming services including Apple Music, Deezer, Napster, Spotify, and TIDAL.

Stemage is perhaps known for contributing to the music of TV animation series Steven Universe and more recently, his soundtrack to platformer Bubsy: Paws on Fire!

“When I started the first music drafts for Card of Darkness, I leaned too friendly,” said the composer via a press release. “When you see animations and colours like the ones in this game, you might assume levity. While the game has a friendly look and an adventurous theme song, it’s a tough game. It’s about learning and managing dozens of enemies, building the appropriate loadout, and insane bosses.”

Developed by conceptual artist Zach Gage and animator Pendleton Ward in collaboration with Choice Provisions, Card of Darkness is available now from Apple Arcade for iOS devices.

Stemage added: “With Zach and I working together on the feel, the music takes an interestingly dark turn. It’s a fun juxtaposition to the visuals. As you get deeper into the soundtrack, it’s serious business – just like the game. It was a joy to work on and a great excuse to work to play with some analog instrumentation.”
